  1. This picture was taken from a negative found by Ray Bice in 2006. It is in the Elias Breidford Collection.

I was speculating about the time frame in which the photo might have been taken. I was guessing it was before Web was born.

According to Ron Freeman's genealogy site, Web was born in 1915. I was thinking the picture was taken by Elias, since it was from a negative in his collection. But the article Leonard Briedford wrote says the Breidford family arrived in Blaine on October 12, 1916, when Elias was 17. Ray Bice has told me Elias was already an amateur photographer in Manitoba, so possibly he did take the picture, but judging from the possible age of Lil and Nina, it could have been
taken no later than summer of 1917, which makes one wonder why Web was not in the picture. Maybe he was inside taking a nap? If the picture was taken in 1917, the girls would be 3 and 4 years of age, however, and they don't look that old to me.

On the other hand, Ray also told me that Elias bought the stock of the previous photographer, so maybe this was one of the negatives that was part of that purchase. I posed these questions to John Breidford (Elias' newphew), and this is what he thought:

"I think the picture was taken before Web was born, probably in 1914. I don't think my Mom (Nina) could have been much older than a year old, maybe 15 months. She was born June 20, 1913 and Lil was Born Jan 1912. My guess is She couldn't have been 3 1/2 in the picture. I didn't know much about when Elias got into the photography business in Blaine, but that photo must have been passed on to him from whoever he took over the business from. Elias would have been 16 when they arrived in Blaine from Manitoba in 1916, having been born April 7, 1900."

I also asked Ray Bice if he thought Elias had taken the photo. Ray said, "Elias was 16 1/2 years old when they came to Blaine and had started to take pictures when he was 13 back in Manitoba.

"I will check some more but from 1912 to 1914 a B.G. Worthington was a photographer in Blaine. From 1920 to 1925 George Shank was here and Elias started to work with him. Shank sold out to Harry Justason and moved to Red Bluff, Calif.  Elias went along to work in that studio. Justason was in Blaine from 1926 to 1927. That is the studio that Elias bought out."

So it is very likely that this negative was in the collection of the photographer whose stock Elias purchased. If the picture was indeed taken in 1914, perhaps the photographer was B.G. Worthington. If that is the case, at the time I got a print made from the negative, the negative was 94 years old!

I wonder if anyone in the family has an original print of this photo?

I'm also wondering if anyone in the family has any earlier photo of Chris and Bena, a wedding picture, or an earlier photo of the young family?

Wouldn't that be something to see!

  2. Hi Rob. As stated by Leonard Breidford, Elias was born April 6th, not April 7th 1900

  4. Rob-
Thanks so much for all the work you have done on this website. My kids are using it to learn about their family history and to make a timeline as part of their homeschool education. Last night we read the story you wrote. The kids laughed and I cried. We all enjoyed the vivid protrayal of history written in this way. We are planning on sharing your website with our homeschool association as the children use it to share a project they are working on there. We can not tell you how much we appreciate what you have done. It is a beautiful thing to honor those who have gone before us so that all they have done to make us who we are will not be forgotten. Their journey is also the journey that we are all on and that will continue long after we are gone. Could there be a more important work than making a record of that journey?

  6. I just wanted to send you kudos on the fine job you’ve done on the newest page of your website, the Sigga and Adolph Anderson family. It is so interesting to learn more about each of our relatives. I wish more of our family would take you up on your generous offer to add their story to your website. It’s a labor of love to our descendants, if we don’t do it, who will?

  7. I just found this site and Lillian was my Amma, I’m Duane daughter. We got a copy of the typed family history from Ray Bergman at my dad’s memorial. I knew there was family history being compiled and am so excited to finally find it! Duane Frederick Bergman passed away on Feb. 20, 2008 and will be interred in Blaine at the Hillsdale cemetary this summer. I remember our vacation on the Freeman farm when I was 11 or 12…I was enchanted with the barn being a city girl from L.B., California. I would love to have more information added for Lillian and her family for all of us to enjoy. Who would we contact to start that process?

  8. Hello, I am Sarah Freeman Bogan’s grandaughter, I wanted to comment, about the 1 year old baby, my great grandparents brought with them from Iceland. My Amma told me that the baby died on the boat they were on from Iceland to North America. She told me when I was a little girl, and over and over I asked her to tell me about the baby, so I heard it many times into my 20′s.!! I really enjoyed looking at the pictures, I had never seen pictures of Jonina (nina) and Christine(stina) before. My Amma said that of all the girls in the family that Nina was the most fetching. anyways Thank you for putting this together–Kathleen
